Edward Avalos, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, was the featured speaker Jan. 28 during the National Cattlemens Beef Association policy division forum.
Avalos said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's priorities this year include creating economic opportunities for rural communities, conserving private land, fighting hunger here and around the world, insuring the safety of our food supply, and keeping future generations in business and on the land.
Avalos touched on a few issues related directly to the beef industry including traceability, unbiased reporting of markets, County of Origin Legislation (COOL), and competition. On the issue of traceability Avalos said USDA is looking for a path that all of the livestock industry can embrace.
The Under Secretary fielded questions from audience on animal identification, EPA rules on particulate matter, COOL and its effect on trade between the U.S. and Mexico, and export markets.
