The opening general session of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) featured an inspiring presentation by Chris Gardner, author of "The Pursuit of Happyness". NCBA members are meeting in San Antonio this week to set policy for their organization.
Chris Gardner's bestselling bookis an account of his life as he struggled with starting a career after becoming homeless. Without a college degree, he earned a spot in the Dean Witter Reynolds training program. During this time he and his 14 month old son slept in a church shelter for the homeless and in a bathroom at the Bay Area Rapid Transit station in Oakland, Calif.
Gardner said he was like a lot of homeless, he had a job but circumstances forced him out onto the streets. According to Gardner 12 percent of homeless people have jobs and got to work everyday.
Throughout his experience Gardner never gave up on his dreams.
"I tell my story for everybody who had a dream and would not quit," Gardner said.
The convention continues today, Jan. 28, with committee meetings and award presentations.
